Tourism in Blida

Blida, nicknamed "the City of Roses," nestles at the foot of Chréa National Park in the Tell Atlas, 30 km south of Algiers. Its proximity to the capital makes it a favorite weekend getaway for Algerois, who head up to Chréa for snow in winter and coolness in summer. Blida is also capital of the Mitidja, a fertile farming plain known for its citrus (blood oranges, mandarins) and wine. The city retains traces of its Andalusian past (Spanish refugees in the 16th century), Ottoman and colonial heritage. Its gardens, refined cuisine and direct access to the Chréa mountain — Algeria's ski resort — make it a year-round destination.

History & culture

Blida was founded in the 16th century by Andalusian refugees expelled from Spain, under Turkish protection. The saint Sidi El Kebir, originally from Castile, is the legendary founder. The city prospered thanks to the abundant water of Wadi El Kebir, feeding gardens and mills. The Ottomans made it a janissary garrison. A terrible 1825 earthquake destroyed it (~7,000 dead); it was rebuilt 2 km west. The French occupied it in 1830, turning it into a military center (the Blidean Atlas commands the strategic Mitidja plain). Colonization turned the Mitidja into vineyards and orange groves. During the independence war, the Blidean Atlas was a major FLN maquis. Today Blida is Algeria's 5th city, a university and agro-industrial hub, capital of Algiers' day-trip tourism.

Local cuisine

Blida fuses Andalusian heritage and Mitidjian terroir. Rechta (homemade steamed pasta, white sauce with chicken and turnips) is the family Sunday dish. Tajine zitoune (chicken with olives and lemon) is a classic. Andalusian desserts (kalb el louz with almonds, baklawa, ktayef in syrup) are a local pride. Citrus jams — bitter orange, mandarin, lemon — are artisanally produced throughout the Mitidja. Pressed orange juices and floral waters (orange blossom, rose) perfume tables. Mitidja wine, produced since colonial times in nearby vineyards, has a long tradition. Chréa honey and mountain goat cheeses complete the offering.

How to get there

Blida is just 30 km south of Algiers via the A1 motorway (45 min by car, sometimes more at peak hours). The ETUSA suburban train runs daily Algiers-Blida services (45 min, ~80 DA), practical for day-trips. Buses depart every 30 min from Blida bus station to Algiers. For Chréa (15 km), take a private taxi or the cable car (seasonal). Many shared taxis serve surrounding villages (Boufarik, Bouinan, Larbaa). Ideal by public transport from Algiers for a day-trip.

When to visit Blida?

Blida enjoys a Mediterranean climate moderated by altitude (260 m). Summers (June-August) are hot (25-32°C) but 3-4°C cooler than Algiers thanks to the Atlas. Winters (December-February) are mild in the plain (5-15°C) but cold and snowy at Chréa (-5 to 5°C, snow 30-60 days/year). Spring (March-May) is exceptional: Mitidja in citrus blossom (unique fragrance in April-May), greening mountains, perfect temperatures (15-25°C). Autumn (September-November) is mild and bright. Moderate rainfall (700 mm/year), mainly in winter.
