History & culture
Béni Abbès is an ancestral oasis inhabited since antiquity, founded according to tradition by the Beni Abbès tribes in the 11th century. The fortified ksar was built in red ocher mud, protecting gardens and palm grove. The region passed under the nominal authority of the Almohads, Hafsids, then became an influential Sufi traditional cultural center in the 15th century. In the 19th century, Béni Abbès was a stop on the caravan route linking Morocco to Timbuktu. Father Charles de Foucauld stayed here in 1901-1902 before settling in Tamanrasset. The French built a military post and the scientific research station here in 1942 (CNRS, desert studies). At independence, Béni Abbès became an Adrar daira, then autonomous wilaya in 2019. The town remains a scientific research center and a top Saharan tourist destination.

Béni Abbès cuisine is classic Saharan. Couscous with mutton and garden vegetables (carrots, turnips, onions) is Sunday's. Fresh Deglet Nour dates, harvested October to December, are a local pride, eaten at breakfast with camel milk. Marqa, a spicy stew of dried meat (gueddid) and tomatoes, slow-simmers. Taguella, wheat bread baked under sand, is consumed in the desert. Rfis with dates (semolina + dates + clarified butter) is a celebration dessert. Mint tea in three rounds paces visits. Rare Saharan honey and local almonds accompany tea breaks. Simple cuisine, sun-soaked and terroir-rich.
