Paris-Algiers, is one of the densest Mediterranean airline routes. Over 30 flights per day during peak season, 5 regular companies, 3 Parisian airports. However, behind the appearances, significant differences exist: on price, baggage, punctuality. Here's the 2026 overview.

The 5 Companies in Competition

  1. Air Algérie
  2. Air France
  3. EasyJet
  4. Ryanair
  5. Transavia

Air Algérie (AH)

Flights per day: 4 to 6 (depending on season)
Paris Airports: Charles de Gaulle (CDG terminal 1), Orly rarely
Duration: approximately 2h30
Average AR price: 320 – 520 € (up to 900 – 1 100 € in July-August and around the Aïd)
Checked baggage included: 23 kg in economy — 1 single piece (Piece Concept system since October 2023)
Cabin baggage: 10 kg
Strengths: included meals, French-speaking crew, extensive internal Algerian network
Weaknesses: variable punctuality, sometimes slow baggage handling at ALG, and most importantly: the 23 kg is no longer the "market record" — it's now standard

Important — end of the 30 kg myth. For years Air Algérie included 30 kg in checked luggage. With the transition to the "Piece Concept" system (October 2023), it is 1 baggage of maximum 23 kg in economy. On your ticket, the mention 1PC / 2PC / 3PC indicates the number of pieces allowed. Anything beyond: excess charge (≈ 40 € online 48 hours before, ≈ 80 € at the Algerian airport). Do not pack your suitcases based on the 30 kg: you will pay the difference at the counter.

Air France (AF)

Flights per day: 2 to 3
Paris Airport: Charles de Gaulle (CDG terminal 2E)
Duration: 2h30
Average AR price: 280 – 600 € (above 900 € in peak summer)
Checked luggage: 23 kg in economy, only one baggage (second baggage as an optional payable extra)
Cabin luggage: 12 kg + small accessory
Strengths: punctuality, Flying Blue loyalty program, premium services
Weaknesses: only one baggage included like everyone else now

ASL Airlines France (5O)

  • Flights per day: 2 to 4
  • Airport Paris: Orly (ORY terminal 4)
  • Duration: 2h25
  • Average Price AR: 250 – 500 € (up to 600 €+ in standard during summer)
  • Checked baggage: 23 kg in standard tariff (option + additional payable supplement)
  • Cabin baggage: 8 kg
  • Strengths: Orly practical for south of Paris, often reasonable prices
  • Weaknesses: aging fleet, little flexibility in case of delay

Transavia (TO)

  • Flights per day: 1 to 3 (low-cost Air France group)
  • Airport Paris: Orly (ORY)
  • Duration: 2h30
  • Average Price AR: 180 – 420 € (but up to 837 € in August in tariff Plus)
  • Checked baggage: not included in base (option ~30-60 € for 23 kg)
  • Cabin baggage: 10 kg in optional payable package, otherwise 1 small bag
  • Strengths: aggressive low prices off-season, Air France reliability
  • Weaknesses: paid checked baggage — the base price increases once the suitcase is added

Vueling (VY)

Flights per day: 1 to 2
Airport Paris: Orly
Duration: 2h30
Average AR price: 190 – 400 €
Checked baggage: not included in base fare
Cabin baggage: 10 kg in Basic (varies according to fare)
Strengths: low prices off-season
Weaknesses: average punctuality, complicated customer support in case of issue

Which Parisian airport to choose?

Airport Airlines Access Ideal for
Roissy-CDG Air Algérie, Air France RER B, taxis 50-65 € North-east Paris
Orly Transavia, ASL, Vueling Orlybus, Orlyval, taxis 45-60 € South Paris, Île-de-France south
Beauvais ❌ No Alger flights

Tip: for morning flights (≤6h30), depart the day before and sleep nearby — RER and shuttles are random before 5h.

When to book for cheaper?

English: When to book for cheaper?

Departure Period When to Book
July-August (diaspora peak) 4-6 months before — prices double from May and approach 1000 €
September-November 6-10 weeks before
December (school vacations) 2-3 months before
January-February 3-5 weeks before — off-season, still find around 220-280 €
Ramadan / Eid 4-6 months before — among the highest prices of the year

Diaspora Tip: Buying return ticket from Algeria, worth it?

This question comes up frequently: buying return ticket once on location, in dinars, to benefit from square rate? The honest answer: sometimes, but not guaranteed.

What the rule says. The Bank of Algeria requires companies and agencies to sell tickets to non-residents at the official rate (≈ 154-155 DA/€), not at the parallel market rate (square, ≈ 275-280 DA/€). Officially, a traveler from the diaspora does not benefit from any discount by buying on location.

What happens in practice. Many small travel agencies in Algeria accept cash payment in Algerian Dinar without strict residence control. In practice: you exchange your euros at the square (approximate rate 277 DA/€), then settle the bill in Algerian Dinar at the agency. On a billed return of 60,000 DA, you will have paid the equivalent of ~217 € at the square rate compared to ~388 € at the official bank card rate — saving approximately 44 % on the return segment.

The best method:

  1. Purchase one-way ticket only from France (bank card, price in euros).
  2. Once in Algeria, exchange your euros at the square.
  3. Reserve cash return ticket in local agency, comparing 2-3 agencies.

Important to know before attempting. (1) It is a gray zone: Algerian monetary regulations do not officially authorize the practice for non-residents — you do so at your own risk. (2) Not all agencies follow this, and some require a residence document: plan B is advisable. (3) During peak season, return may be fully booked or overpriced on site — do not risk your return date if you have an imperative (work, school). (4) Always have something to buy a last-minute return. For a short stay with fixed dates, purchasing round trip in advance remains safer.

Diaspora Travel Deals

English: N/A (This section is not translated as it refers to specific deals and promotions which may not be applicable or available outside of Algeria)

  1. 23 kg everywhere, anticipate — Air Algérie's 30 kg time is over; weigh your luggage before leaving and pay the excess online (half price vs airport)
  2. Transavia / Vueling for short stays without baggage — interesting call if you travel light, but add checked baggage to comparison
  3. Compare Orly vs CDG — possible difference of 50 € on the same week
  4. Check the stops — a Paris-Alger with stop (Marseille, Lyon, Barcelona) can be 20-30 % cheaper
  5. Buy one-way ticket in France, return one-way ticket in Algeria in cash — see the section above: ~44 % savings possible on return, at your own risk
  6. Avoid adding second checked baggage at the counter — always add it online, it's 2x cheaper

What can be brought back from Algeria by plane?

Allowed in checked luggage:

  • Dates, honey, olive oil (in reasonable quantity, < 5 L)
  • Spices, semolina, raih (sealed)
  • Traditional clothing, carpets

Prohibited / Restricted:

  • More than 10,000 DA in cash (mandatory declaration; foreign currencies exceeding the equivalent of 1,000 € also declare at entry)
  • Ancient works of art (originals or copies)
  • Corals and shells
  • Unsealed foods (cheeses, meats)

And Houari Boumédiène Airport (ALG)?

Algiers International Airport, modernized with its new Terminal West. Expect 30-45 minutes between landing and arrival zone exit. Taxi to the city center: 1 500 – 2 500 DA (metered or negotiated price in advance). Distance: 20 km. Official exchange booths are available in the arrivals hall — but for square rate, you'll need to reach the city.

After the flight: organize your stay

Once in Alger, you will need accommodation and possibly a car. Algérie Tourisme combines the two in one tool:**

  • Accommodations in Alger, verified, with recent photos
  • Cars from local approved rental companies
  • Diaspora-friendly payment: initial payment in EUR by card + remaining amount in DZD cash on site
