Oran, nicknamed "El Bahia" (the Radiant), is the second city of Algeria, situated on the Mediterranean at 430 km to the west of Alger. Mediterranean port, intact colonial city center, 30 km of western beaches: Oran collects accolades. Here's how to visit it in 3-4 days without missing anything.
Why Oran deserves more than a detour
Three good reasons:
- A historically dense city center. More compact than Alger: regional theater, Place du 1ᵉʳ Novembre, Belle Époque buildings, Pacha Mosque — everything is within a square kilometer.
- The sea everywhere. The Ibn Badis seafront stretches along the bay for 3 km, and it's another 15 minutes west to reach the beaches.
- A more relaxed atmosphere than Alger. Late-opening cafes, affordable fish restaurants, milder climate.
The 6 must-sees
1. Fort Santa Cruz (mont Murdjadjo)
Constructed by the Spaniards in the 16th century, the fort overlooks the bay at an altitude of 400 meters. The panoramic view from the esplanade — Murdjadjo mountains, bay, port and the entire city at your feet — is the classic photo of Oran. A popular picnic spot for Oranais on weekends, especially at sunset.
How to get there: Taxi 500-800 DA from the center, winding road, ~20 min. Prefer early morning or late afternoon to avoid heat and have the best light.
2. Place du 1er Novembre 1954 (ex-place d'Armes)
The historical heart of the city. At the center, the statue of Emir Abdelkader. Around: the Regional Theatre Abdelkader Alloula (1907, Belle Époque magnificent façade), the old town hall, Pacha mosque. Mandatory café-terrace at the end of the day.
3. Sidi El Houari and the old city
The historical quarter, on the heights behind the port. Pacha Mosque (1796), Palace of the Bey, narrow streets of the ancient medina. Quarter undergoing full rehabilitation, very photogenic. Ideal for a morning stroll.
4. Ibn Badis Seafront
A 3km promenade along the bay, palm trees, benches, view of the port and Murdjadjo. A favorite spot for Oran locals at sunset — the atmosphere is worth the detour as much as the view.
5. Port and Létang Promenade
Oran's port remains a major commercial port. From the Létang Promenade (above the port), one has the best panoramic view of the bay. The Marine Quarter, below, is worth a visit for its fish markets and small restaurants.
6. Ahmed Zabana Museum
Oran's national museum: archaeology, fine arts, ethnography. 1885 building, coherent collection, ideal for understanding the region's history. Entrance ~200 DA. Allow 1h30.
Beaches, 15-35 minutes from the city center
The western coast of Oran stretches beaches for 30 km:
| Beach | Distance from Oran | Characteristic |
|---|---|---|
| Aïn El Turk | 15 km | Family beach station, animation, restaurants |
| Bousfer Plage | 20 km | More tranquil, cliffs and small coves |
| Cap Falcon | 22 km | Small sheltered beach, turquoise waters |
| Les Andalouses | 25 km | Most known, long sandy beach, hotel complexes |
| Madagh | 35 km | Wild beach, fewer people, more to the west |
Mers el Kébir (5 km to the west) — not a proper beach but the historic military port, with a spectacular promenade.
Oranese cuisine
Three things to absolutely try:
- Calentita (or karantika) : chickpea flour cake baked in an oven, served hot in paper. Oran's specialty par excellence, sold everywhere on the street for 30-50 DA.
- Mahjouba : semolina crepe filled with stewed vegetables, popular dish to be eaten hot.
- Grilled fish : dorade, sardines, rouget — head to the Marine or Aïn El Turk for the best tables (1 500-3 000 DA per person).
The fresh squeezed orange juice: Oran is known for its fresh squeezed juices, sold in all cafes for 50-100 DA per glass.
When to go
| Season | Verdict |
|---|---|
| April-June | Ideal. Mild, sunny, calm beaches. |
| July-August | Very hot (35-38°C), crowded beaches on weekends. To be avoided if possible. |
| September-October | Excellent compromise. Warm sea, less crowd. |
| November-March | Mild but rainy, difficult swimming. Good for the city. |
How many days to plan
2 days: colonial old town + Santa Cruz. Quick but possible.
3 days (recommended): city + Santa Cruz + one beach (Les Andalouses or Aïn El Turk).
4-5 days: adds Mers el Kébir, Madagh, and an excursion to Tlemcen (140 km southwest, another pearl of northwestern Algeria).
By plane from Paris: Air Algérie, ASL Airlines, and Vueling serve Ahmed Ben Bella Airport (ORN), 10 km south of the city. AR 250-450 € off-season, up to 800 € in July-August. See our Paris-Algiers flights guide.
From Alger: train (4h30, ~1500 DA in 1st class, comfortable and punctual), road (5-6h via A1 highway), internal flight (45 min, ~3500-5500 DA).
Car rental on site: essential if you want to visit beaches and excursions. Count 3500-5000 DA/day for a city car from a local renter.
Diaspora deals
English: N/A (This section seems to be missing in the original French text)
- Oran Airport is small and calm — best arrival experience for summer return, especially with family and luggage in Oran.
- Currency Exchange: no square exchange booths in the arrivals hall. Exchange only enough to pay for a taxi (~1500 DA), then go into town. In May 2026: ~275-280 DA for 1 EUR at square, compared to 154-155 DA at the official rate — nearly doubling.
- The Andalusias in high season: reserve your accommodation 2-3 months in advance for July-August. Rentals go quickly.
- Recommended month for diaspora: June or September. Family is already there, beaches still pleasant, without the August crowd.
- Compare with Aïn El Turk if you want animation, or Bousfer/Cap Falcon if you want calm — it's only 5 km apart.
Once there: accommodation and car
English:
- Accommodation: consider staying in a villa or apartment for more space and privacy, especially with family.
- Car Rental: most agencies require a local driver's license. Check if your international driver's permit is accepted.
- Parking: parking can be challenging in urban areas, so consider renting a place with private parking or using public parking lots when available.
- GPS and Maps: Google Maps works well for navigation, but having a physical map as a backup is recommended.
- Taxis: taxis are readily available, but negotiate the fare before starting your journey to avoid misunderstandings.
