Mostaganem is Oran's quieter little sister: barely 80 km east, a calmer coast, less crowded beaches, and a strong cultural identity — this is where Yennayer (Amazigh New Year) is celebrated with the most fanfare in Algeria. Home of Sidi Lakhdar Benkhlouf, Sufism, and theater. Here's what to see, when to go, and how to plan your trip.

Why visit Mostaganem?

Mostaganem developed atop coastal cliffs. The upper town — old Mostaganem — hides white alleys and Ottoman houses, while the lower town runs along the harbor and corniche. People come here for three reasons:

  1. The beaches — 124 km of coastline, with family-friendly beaches (Sablettes, Kharouba) and wilder ones (Sidi Mansour, Ouréah)
  2. The Sufi and cultural heritage — mausoleum of Sidi Lakhdar Benkhlouf (16th-century poet), traditional zaouias, amateur theater festival in summer
  3. The calm — the alternative for those who want the sea without the summer crowds of Oran or Algiers

The 6 must-see spots

1. Sablettes Beach

The family beach par excellence. Fine sand over 3 km, with umbrellas and food stalls. Ideal for children (shallow water for the first 30 meters) and for sunsets. Easy access by taxi or on foot from the center.

2. Kharouba Beach

15 km to the west, this is THE weekend beach of the region. Larger, livelier, with tourist complexes and seaside seafood restaurants. The Kharouba complex also offers jet ski and boat rentals.

3. Bordj Turc (Turkish Fort)

Perched on the cliff, a 16th-century Ottoman remnant. Panoramic view over the Mediterranean and the lower town. Free access, about 45 minutes for the visit. Best time: late afternoon for sunset.

4. Sidi Lakhdar Benkhlouf Mausoleum

The great 16th-century Sufi poet, author of the famous qasâ'id about the Prophet. The mausoleum, a few kilometers south of the city, remains an active pilgrimage site. Contemplative atmosphere, peaceful setting. Modest dress required.

5. Mazagran

Historic village 8 km south of Mostaganem. It's here that the famous Battle of Mazagran (1840) took place, where 123 French soldiers resisted 4 days against 12,000 Algerian fighters. Ancient alleys, colorful Friday morning market.

6. The Corniche and the Marina

The corniche stretches several kilometers between the port and Sablettes beach. Cafés, ice cream shops, families strolling in the evening. The Marina, more recent, is the weekend hotspot for young people.
