Renting a car in Algeria: complete 2026 guide (prices, paperwork, driving)

By Super Admin·

Renting a car in Algeria remains, in 2026, the most flexible solution to discover the country beyond the big cities. Trains and buses exist but their schedules are binding, and distances are enormous. This is what you need to know before you sign a contract.

Do you really need to rent a car?

Yes if:

  • You want to explore the coast (Tipaza, Bejaia, Annaba) at your own pace
  • You're family with luggage.
  • You want to go to Kabylie or the highlands
  • You stay longer than 5 days

No if:

  • You only stay in Algiers (taxis and Yassir are enough)
  • You want to go to the great South (Tassili, Hoggar) — there, it is in convoy 4x4 with authorized guide, not in classic rental car

What documents should be provided?

For French, Belgian, Swiss, Canadian (and diaspora with Algerian passport):

  • Required document? Notes

• Driver's licence
International Permits, Recommended — Mandatory for driving beyond 6 months
Passport
For the deposit (Visa/Mastercard)
• Justificatif de réservation logement

Minimum age: 21 years mostly (23-25 years for 4x4 and upscale), with a licence held for at least 1 year.

How much does it really cost?

Average prices 2026, 7 day rental, unlimited mileage:

  • Category - Models - Rate / day

• Economics • Hyundai i10, Kia Picanto
· Citadine
• Berliner, Hyundai Accent, Skoda Octavia
Duster, Kia Sportage
Toyota Hilux, Land Cruiser

Seasonally: count +20 to +30 % in July-August and during Ramadan.

The bail: what to know

The bond is usually taken by bank print (pre-authorisation not debited):

  • City: 50,000-80,000 DA
  • Berlin / SUV: 100 000 to 150 000 DA
  • 4x4 : 200 000 DA and more

Some local landlords still require bail in cash. Prefer a renter who accepts pre-authorization by card — it is safer and easier to recover.

Driving in Algeria: what to know

Road code

  • Driving right, as in France
  • Limitation: 50 in town, 80 on road, 110-120 on motorway
  • Mandatory belt, verbalized steering wheel telephone
  • Priority on the right in roundabouts unless otherwise indicated

L road condition

  • East-West highway: excellent, crosses the country from west to east (Maghnia → Annaba)
  • National roads: overall good
  • Secondary (mountain) rusts: chicken nests, caution

Fuel

Numerous service stations on the motorway and main axes. Not everywhere in the South — plan gasoline cans and plan your full. Fuel very cheap (~50 DA/L unleaded in 2026).

Local driving

Be firm and proactive. The horns are common (meaning presence, not aggression). No motorway toll. Police checks are common — keep your papers accessible.

Three diaspora councils

  1. Book before arrival — especially in summer. Stock is limited and prices rise.
  2. Inspect the vehicle at support — photograph each existing scratch with time stamp. It's essential to get your deposit back.
  3. Check tires and jack — many roads in the South can die a tire. A jack and a spare wheel are vital.

What about the big South?

For Tassili, Hoggar, M Zab deep, no classic rental. You must go through a local authorized agency that provides 4x4 vehicle + driver guide. It is an obligation for desert areas (security, navigation, authorisations).
