Algeria, a rapidly rising tourist destination

By Super Admin·

Algeria as a tourist destination in the middle of the ascent

Long remained discreet on the international tourism map, Algeria has since 2024 experienced increasing popularity among travellers seeking authenticity. The largest country in Africa, with 58 wilayas with contrasting landscapes — from the Mediterranean to the Sahara, from the kabyles mountains to the Hoggar dunes — Algeria now attracts those who are looking for something other than traditional tourist routes.

Why now?

Several factors explain this renewed interest:

###1. A policy of gradual openness

The Algerian State has increased its efforts to facilitate access for foreign travellers:

  • Electronic Visa (e-visa) being deployed — announced by the authorities, list of eligible nationalities not yet fully published
  • Visa on arrival in a dozen wilayas of the Great South (Tamanrasset, Djanet, Illizi, Adrar...) — reserved for group travellers organized via an authorized travel agency
  • An ambitious national tourism strategy — Master Plan of Tourist Planning by 2030, with a target of 12 million tourists
  • Investments in hotel and airport infrastructure

###2. Social networks have changed the situation

The videos of the Casbah of Algiers, the dunes of Taghit, the frescoes of Tassili n'Ajjer or the plages of Tipaza circulate massively on TikTok and Instagram. A new generation of Algerian and foreign creators (Drew Binsky, Eva zu Beck and other influential travellers) have put the country in the spotlight with a positive narrative, far from the clichés.

###3. Unbeatable value for money

With a relatively low dinar against strong currencies, travelling in Algeria remains 2 to 3 times cheaper than in Tunisia or Morocco with equivalent comfort. The host houses in the M'Zab, the seafront villas in Tipaza or Bejaia, the 4×4 circuits in the Sahara are accessible to very reasonable budgets — often less than would be spent for a weekend in Southern Europe.

###4. Diaspora rediscovers its country

More than 8 million Algerians live abroad, and many are now returning as tourists rather than only for the family. Summer trips are no longer limited to Algiers or the family home: you can discover Les Aurès, go up to the Hoggar, enjoy guided excursions to the Sahara, reserve a stay in a medina in Constantine.

What really attracts

The Sahara, within reach

Southern Algeria offers some of the most spectacular landscapes on the planet, accessible from Algiers in 2-3 hours:

  • Tamanrasset & the Hoggar: volcanic mountains, plateaus at 2,000 m altitude, oasis and Touaregue tribes
  • Djanet & Le Tassili n'Ajjer: 12 000 year old rock paintings, classified as UNESCO
  • Timimoun: the "red town" of the Gourara, oasis and palm groves
  • Taghit: the most photogenic dunes in the country

The Mediterranean coast

1,200 km of coastline between Tunisia and Morocco, with unknown pearls:

  • Tipaza: Roman ruins facing the sea, sandy beaches
  • Béjaia : the kabyle cornice, Cap Carbon, hidden beaches
  • Annaba : Hippo and the Basilica of St. Augustine
  • Oran & Mostaganem: colonial architecture, Algerian paella, sunset corsair

Cultural heritage

  • La Casbah d'Alger (UNESCO): Ottoman medina labyrinthic
  • Tlemcen: Andalusian-Moorish city, medieval palace
  • Ghardaïa and M'Zab (UNESCO): unique Berber architecture
  • Jemila and Timgad: Roman ruins among the best preserved in the world

##A cuisine to discover

Couscous, chorba, mhajeb, makroud, dolma, brik, tajine de Constantine, calentica d'Oran, honey semen, cardamom coffee... Algerian gastronomy is rich, generous, and too little known abroad.

How to book your stay

It is precisely in order to facilitate access to these experiences that we launched Algeria Tourism, the first market place 100% Algerian which includes:

Accommodations: villas, guest houses, apartments checked in all wilayas

Excursion guided by passionate local tour operators

All payments are secured (Stripe in EUR/USD, Chargily in DZD), with flexible cancellation and 7j/7 support in French, Arabic and English.

And then what?

If you still hesitate, look at what's on the networks. Algeria 2025-2026 has nothing to do with that of 10 years ago: improved roads, renovated hotels, guests trained in international hospitality, booking applications like Algeria Tourism that simplify all logistics.

This is probably the right time to come — before Algeria became, like Morocco 20 years ago, a classic tourist guide. You will still meet few tourists, lots of sunshine, and the legendary hospitality of a people who look forward to sharing.
